Women who've crushed it Wednesdays
If you've ever met a woman in rock band, they will tell you that visibility and equal representation in media isn't something that is easy to come by. We would like to make it easier for you to find new music you will love (hopefully as much as we do). Here at Ethos Live, we think culture that leaves out half of the population is seriously uncool.
Here's the newest for women who have crushed it in music this week. Be sure to follow our Spotify Playlist which will be featuring bands from this list.
Melbourne Australia grungepop singer-guitarist Ali Barter is only a few weeks away from her debut album release of A Suitable Girl. Barter channels 90's vibes with her melodic voice over a big buzzy (and very memorable) chorus in her new music video "Cigarette" The lyrics are really relatable to any girl who's been with someone who fetishizes the idea of being in a relationship more than caring about them. I mean, I dare you to not get this stuck in your head.-MT
Slingshot Dakota & Ratboys
Topshelf Records bands Slingshot Dakota and Ratboys hit the road this Friday for a spring tour. With Carly Comando on vocals/keys in Slingshot Dakota and Julia Steiner on vocals/guitar in Ratboys, this a match worth seeing. Slingshot Dakota's new song "Grudge" is our song of the week. Ratboys is a seriously soothing band to listen to with their take on post-country that is uplifting. They'll be local at Shea Stadium on 3/6 with Teenage Halloween and Mallrat. -MT
In the past, I wasn't the biggest fan of Diet Cig. I didn't find them to be very musical and brushed them off on my first impression. However, this music video and song has converted me into a believer. Featuring some sort of a grrrl gang, with girls of all ages, races, and sizes, having fun in a city by getting into an underground punk show and making arts and crafts. The video speak volumes for our generation and what we believe punk should be and represent at this point in time at this point in time. I'm not crying, you're crying! -MT
Tank and the Bangas
I was lucky enough to discover Tank and the Bangas thanks to NPR's Tiny Desk Contest of which they were announced as winners this week. With a mixture of spoken word and a soulful voice on top of a fusion of all kinds of genres including jazz and hip hop, New Orleans Tank and the Bangas is hands down the most original thing I've heard in a long while. - MT
I first discovered Royal Thunder in an unlikely support slot: opening up for The Dillinger Escape Plan at Music Hall of Williamsburg. I was blown away by the powerful vocals and their unique spin on classic rock influences. Their hard hitting new single, "April Showers" perfects their refreshing mix of psychedelic rock, blues and grunge. This track is off of their third full length album Wick, which is due April 7 on Spinefarm Records. -MD
